Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
New research suggests that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
